Wednesday 30th September – Hike ***** - sunny - Col de Rousset to Rousset ski resort- 5 miles, 5.5 hrs out!

Woke after a top night’s sleep in our spot on top of the world at the Col de Rousset to clear blue skies, only problem was the sun didn’t get to our van until about ten :( so a bit on the chilly side – 8 degrees! This didn’t stop us doing our exercises with stunning views and we were able to air our bedding too! About 9 an animal transport lorry made the long windy journey up and reversed into the track we walked up yesterday so I walked over to investigate? The Shepherds had brought the large flock we had seen high in the mountains yesterday to be taken down the valley, probably for their last journey:( all you can say is that they had a nice short life grazing in the most beautiful spot! We were entertained during breakfast by two Chamois on the steep scree behind the van and a lone rock climber hanging on a rope on a sheer rock face knocking in pins to get around an over-hang! We decided to try out our brand new Aldi walking poles by heading up the GR 93 path, the opposite way to yesterday. I packed a picnic and books in the ruck sack, setting off at midday. The first part of the journey was the toughest with a short steep section to a couple of hundred metres of loose scree – Mags favourite! Following the red and white marked GR93 we soon left the van far below. We reached a point where we could see down into the little ski resort of Rousset with a couple of lifts out and several tree lined runs and thought we would like to give it a go when the snow arrives ! Then after crossing some pistes and tree lined tracks deep in leaves we reached the next level and it opened up into a large bowl with fantastic views with two more ski lifts giving access to lots more skiing :) As far as the eye could see there was a cliff edge with a sheer drop onto fantastic columns of rock. We headed to the first vantage point where there was a circle of stone tables naming all the surrounding peaks and stopped here for our picnic, reading a couple of chapters in the warm sunshine:) Feeling refreshed we continued around the edge of the cliff to just above the first button lift where we sat on the edge for ages being entertained by three huge vultures soaring below us, we even spotted them resting on a rock column below! Then we went down to where the Rousset chair lift reaches the bowl before heading down the pistes – steep too! Just above the button lift we had our chocolate bar and banana, reading another chapter by the cliff edge again. Then in need of a cuppa we returned to the van and put the kettle on! We were out for 5.50 hours even if we only covered 5 miles but they were top miles :) Mag made a delicious carbonara as the sun set behind the mountains - the wind has picked up strong; let’s hope it doesn’t keep us awake!
